Deed Poll – Change of Name

A deed poll is a legal document which is drawn up stating you are abandoning your previous name and will use your new name at all times, requiring all persons to address you by your new name only. This document must then be signed in both your old name and new name.

Anyone over the age of 16 can choose to change their name at any time, and for any reason, as long as their intent is not to defraud or deceive another person.

Although, if a child is under the age of 16, parental responsibility is required before a change of name deed can be entered into. We strongly advise you speak to one of team to discuss this area further.

The most common reasons that people choose to change their name are as follows:-

  • They are unhappy with their current name
  • Divorce or separation
  • To have the same surname as their child
